Jericho was the gateway to the hill country, the first city Israel conquered in the Conquest (Josh 6). It guarded the Jordan crossing, and the Bible tells how its walls fell. Jesus healed blind Bartimaeus here and met Zacchaeus here (Luke 19), calling him down from a sycamore tree.
