A royal city in the central hills between Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim. Abraham's first stop in Canaan, where Joshua renewed the covenant, and later the northern kingdom's capital.

Shechem stood at the crossroads of the central hill country. Abraham camped here when he first entered the promised land (Gen 12:6), and Joshua gathered all Israel for the covenant renewal here (Josh 24). It later became the center of the Samaritan movement.
